Crash

I've been trying to draw more, but apparently software is a new creative block. So here's a screenshot of something I was working on last night before I lost the file.

One benefit of this was when trying to open the file again I remembered I'd installed the new version of Mischief. Hopefully it doesn't break like this, because I really like sketching in it.

Draw All The Robots - Details

A few close-ups from my previous post. I remember feeling too embarrassed to post this at the time. It hadn't occurred to me that someone might have already done this sort of thing.

Draw All The Robots

I was looking through some old work today and found this piece. I started it a few years ago for some International Robot Day (there's a lot of them, can't remember the exact name) but before I could finish the colour and fill it out with a floor, shadows, reflections, etc. I discovered someone had done almost the exact same picture (only with a tighter composition and the great concept of "Where's Wall-E") and I lost all the wind in my sails. I couldn't face dedicating any more hours to what would amount to be an uninspired duplicate.

I'm still really proud of the art here though. I am tempted to finish it off just for myself - might make a nice poster for my wall. What do you think? I might have to update it with all the new popular robots from the past few years if I did.

Sunken

Wow, here's another find. Something I started at least three years ago and somehow forgot about. I quite like it so far. Might revisit it.

He's Going to Eat It

A sneak peek at a personal project I'm working on. Stage 1 of 3 is finally complete - a little behind schedule, but all the hard work is done now.

This was meant to be Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty from Blade Runner, but it ended up looking a lot more like Gordon Ramsay. I've changed him since, but I still feel that this looks more like Ramsay than the new one looks like Hauer. Bit disappointed.

Advent Drawings...

...Are coming soon! Just finished a job I was doing which took up all my time. It was meant to be released today but there was some issue that needed resolving so it looks like it'll be out on Monday. More on this, on... Monday.

Impact

Hello to all my blog buddies! Just stopping in to announce that my dissertation is finally finished and submitted, and none too soon! I can now finally devote some more effort to my film. So, expect more of this in the near future!

Trooper Deep Shot

This blog is doubling as a production diary for my film at the moment, so expect lots more posts like these in the future.

I've been experimenting on the models (which Rob has built for me) to create the 2D style I want that should hopefully match the backgrounds in my film. This is early days, but it's showing that toon shading, shadows and fog in 3D can produce some promising results...

Everything here is the same shader at the moment but that will change. A lot of the smaller and more distant things (like guard rails and small pipes) will have fewer leves of shading (either solid or with one shadow) to stop them look too complex and 3D. And it needs to be coloured too, obviously.

Cannon Ball Smoke Test 2

Paul and I have been tweaking the previous test animation and have come up with this. It's looking much better. A lot closer to the concept drawing. Didn't use it as reference mind you so the colour's a bit different.

Trooper Updates

Some updates from the film I'm currently working on. Some stills, concept art, the works.

Rob's been doing the 3D modelling for me based on my designs. I'll update with some better pics soon, these are pretty early.

Watch

The next step in convince. Continuing on my implants concept. This one's a rougher concept than the previous one, I'm going to continue working on it to try and get a better integration. Skin is tricky to work with. I just used the watch I wear for this test; the next version will probably be modernsied with a small phone-like LCD screen rather than an old digital display. Or maybe even a good old fashioned clockwork one...

I imagine this would be one of the first, a prototype. Soon designers will start adding the art to these implants, making them designer items. Some may find the permanence unappealing, but others will see this as being akin to tattoos or piercings.

2D/3D and Effects Animation

A few bits and pieces I've been working on. There's nothing final here, just tests and animatic material.

Nebulae

My second go at creating some space backgrounds following this one. I could probably work this one a lot more but I really must get some sleep.

Apes! Colour Studies 1

Some colour studies for a film I'm helping out on. They're all painted on top of stills from the animatic, which you can see here.

More to come!

Elwood in the Snow

A work in progress that I've kind of abandoned for reasons... anyway, enjoy what I did so far!

Nebula, in Progress

A star field background with some nebula action going on. Nothing too flashy or eye catching, there's going to be some foreground activity I don't want overshadowed. The first picture in this post, actually.
